What are the best solutions for lighting up my garden?

I’m planning to revamp my garden because it looks really bad. Right now I have everything figured out when it comes to vegetation and pathways as I’ve been in contact with a good landscaping company from which I got a bit of advice. However, I haven’t yet still found a solution in regards to the outdoor lighting aspect. My head is spinning with possibilities: short lights, tall ones, electrical, solar powered, hanging, architectural, ambient etc.

The only thing I know is that I want to have some switch in order to turn the lights on and off whenever I want. But in the same time I want some motion detector lights in case there is somebody sneaking up though my garden at nights. However, I heard from some people that these kinds of lights can detect passing animals such as cats and dogs, which translated into a lot of false alarms…and the problem is that I spook easily.
